about

Originally released on the out-of-print 1970/73 album, Brainhammer, this very famous and frequently covered Spinal Tap tune has continued to be easily associated with the bass clarinet quartet format for obvious reasons. Although the original version (re-released on the compilation This is Spinal Tap) makes great use of the double entendre to refer to both the female posterior and low bass frequencies, with this instrumental version we can only rely on the latter to get the point across. Luckily, the actual piece itself stands quite well on its own even without such classic lyrics as “Big Bottom, drive me out of my mind/How could I leave this Behind?” From This is Spinal Tap: The Official Companion: “… a brilliant pastiche of hard rock’s characteristically unsubtle sexual imagery. Rock is, of course, largely about sex, and the suggestiveness of the blues lyric endures in the words of heavy rock.” Brainhammer also included the more obscure tracks “Lie Back and Take It” and “ Swallow My Love.”

Edmund Welles: the bass clarinet quartet Oakland, California

Edmund Welles has the distinction of being the world’s only original, composing band of four bass clarinetist: they invent and perform heavy chamber music. Drawing virtuosic precision from the classical realm; innovation and texture from jazz; and power, rhythm and overall perspective from rock and metal, the quartet’s sound is characterized by a thickness of tone and absolute rhythmic prowess. ... more
